Lindley Clock Tower

We had the privilege to light up Lindley Clock Tower in Huddersfield for the first time in it’s 115 history!

Designed in 1900 and erected in 1902 by James Nield Sykes, the Art Nouveau clock tower rises impressively to a height of 83 feet, its stature accentuated by diagonal corner buttresses culminating in pinnacles above the eaves of the distinctive copper-clad octagonal pagoda roof, now adorned with its characteristic green patina. Crafted from sturdy local stone, with walls exceeding two feet in thickness, the tower’s size is further emphasised by the mullions framing the bell chamber, slit windows, and exquisitely carved elongated figures positioned above the doorway and near the summits of the four buttresses. These intricately detailed figures, along with the masterful copper roofing, were the artistic creations of sculptor Stirling Lee, whom Wood entrusted with multiple projects.

Utilising our Arrow FL floods, we delivered warm white illumination that beautifully complements the natural stone of the tower. Prior to final installation, we conducted an on-site trial to ensure both the customer and local councillors were satisfied with the results. The official switch-on event attracted a sizable crowd, and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive, further validating the success of the project.
