Spider Bridge, Sheffield

We often encounter unique and intriguing projects, and here’s another one – illuminating the Spider Bridge in Sheffield, nestled near the disused Sheffield Victoria railway station in South Yorkshire. Constructed in 2002, its innovative design tackles a challenging dilemma; facilitating passage for the riverside cycle and footpath (the Five Weirs Walk) beneath the imposing Wicker Arches viaduct while connecting the two banks of the River Don. Without the Spider Bridge, pedestrians and cyclists would face a cumbersome one-mile detour.

Crafted by Sheffield City Council’s Structures Section, this 100M long bridge is supported by a network of steel cables anchored beneath the viaduct, which explains its name. To enhance the bridge’s theme, imposing steel spider sculptures were installed to obscure the overhead lighting.

We used our MFL floodlights to illuminate the spiders’ eyes after dark, creating a mesmerising effect. This attention to detail not only adds an element of intrigue and drama but also transforms the bridge into a captivating spectacle for all who pass by. We love projects that allow us to showcase our creativity and ingenuity in lighting design, turning ordinary structures into interesting landmarks.
